A Day In The Life Of A Social Media Specialist

Things look insanely different for so many people during a worldwide pandemic. As a Social Media Specialist, I’ve learned how to work completely remotely while keeping my sanity. This is a position that can work remotely rather easily, however during this time, you can easily get stuck in the same routine and become exhausted. Here’s how the daily flow goes for a Social Media Specialist in the current world we live in.

MORNING

As soon as I get up, I immediately get on social media. So many Instagram Influencers and Lifestyle junkies will tell you this is exactly what you shouldn’t do. In the world of creating content, however, it is so important to see what is trending on each and every platform. A quick scroll through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and even Pinterest can really help get my creative juices flowing and it shows me the content that big-name creators are already going for today.

After my personal connection with social media and a quick granola bar to bring up my energy, it’s straight to work. We, at SociallyUP, use multiple team-friendly applications, which is so helpful during a time when we don’t get to work directly together. I always start by catching up on emails through Outlook, making sure I didn’t miss anything overnight.

Next, I transition to our Slack, which has been a godsend. We’ve started listing our weekly tasks every Monday and our current to-do’s every morning, which has been so helpful to know exactly what the team is working on and how you could potentially help them. We recently started playing around with Asana instead of our usual Trello to assign our own tasks and stay on track throughout our work week. While this is new to us, like many things are, we love the easy workflow.

Once I’ve gotten caught up and know exactly what I’m prepared to work on any given day, I get straight to it. At the beginning of a month, I like to personally connect with my clients through a Zoom call to go over strategy. Where are we looking to grow? How can we achieve that? What has been working? What should we continue? What should we leave out?

These meetings are genuinely important to let your clients know you’re always available and you’re working hard to help them. It also helps you hear exactly what the client wants so that you can carry that out in their next content plan. Most work in the middle of the month consists of scheduling content through Later and creating graphics for their content through Canva and occasionally Photoshop. This requires a lot of attention to detail, creative thinking, and focus, which can be extremely draining. It is always important to take small breaks to let your mind relax on some other task, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes.

AFTERNOON

When lunch rolls around, a Social Media Specialist may already feel like they’ve had a full day of work. My brain and eyes are so tired from staring at screens all morning that I always take my lunch break somewhere I can get some fresh air and enjoy natural light for a little while. I always keep my Slack and email open and on hand in case I’m needed quickly during lunch. Sometimes even deep breathing can really help to relax the mind before getting right back into work.

Sometime in the afternoon, we have a team Zoom meeting to touch base on where we are, where our clients are, and how we are doing. It’s so important in this current state to be in communication with your team so you can feel comfortable asking for help when it’s needed. This also can help keep you on track when you have a designated time to look forward to and share what you’ve been creating all day.

END OF DAY

It’s back into the swing of things for the last couple of hours of the day. It feels extremely rewarding to click off that to-do you have been working on all day and send out the preview to your client. This is also the time when you can take any feedback you have already received from a client and edit your work to send out a fresh link. I always check my calendar and tasks to see if I have any posts that aren’t automatically scheduled so I can get those posted as well before I’m clocked out for the day. I like to check on Slack to see any updates from my team before I clock out, just in case someone needs any last-minute help.

A Social Media Specialist can spend their day helping you achieve your goals through social media strategy, brand development, social media management, and ad management which are all services we offer here at SociallyUP. Connect with a content specialist today to make your brand stand out among others and see exponential growth on many different platforms.
